Preparing Samples for Elektron Digitakt
The Elektron Digitakt is a legendary 8-voice drum computer and sampler. To get the best out of its 1 GB +Drive storage, preparing your samples before transferring them is crucial. Here is how to format your library perfectly on macOS.
Sample Requirements
The original Digitakt expects audio in this pristine format:
- Format: WAV (uncompressed)
- Channels: Mono (single channel)
- Sample rate: 48 kHz natively
- Bit depth: 16-bit
Why Convert to Mono BEFORE Transferring?
While the Elektron Transfer app automatically converts stereo files to mono on upload, doing it beforehand with an app like It's mono, yo! offers two massive advantages:
- File size is halved: A mono WAV file takes up exactly half the hard drive space on your Mac. Transferring hundreds of samples via USB goes much faster when not sending heavy stereo files.
- Better Downmix Algorithm: It's mono, yo! uses an intelligent algorithm to sum stereo space to mono, capturing the depth that a quick default mono downmix might lose.
How to Batch Convert for Digitakt
If you have gigabytes of ambient samples and drum packs, you can batch convert them to mono in seconds:
- Download the app from the Mac App Store
- Drag all your stereo WAVs directly onto the app window
- In Output Settings (if applicable), configure them to 48 kHz / 16-bit.
- Choose a dedicated output folder (e.g. "Digitakt Ready Samples")
- Hit Convert. Once done, open the Elektron Transfer app and drag the new folder.
Sample Preparation Tips
- Truncate extreme silences at the start and end of drums to save RAM.
- Remember that the Digitakt pitch engine interpolates heavily — uploading extremely clean 48kHz masters gives the filter the best possible starting point!
