Preparing Samples for Elektron Model:Samples
The Elektron Model:Samples is a fast, fun groovebox built around 6 sample tracks. But here is the catch: every track is mono. If you drag in stereo files, you lose half the sound. Here is how to convert your sample library properly on Mac.
Sample Format Requirements
The Model:Samples expects audio in this format:
- Format: WAV (uncompressed)
- Channels: Mono only — stereo files are downmixed automatically
- Sample rate: 48 kHz native
- Bit depth: 16-bit
- Storage: 1 GB Flash, up to 1024 samples
Why You Should Convert Beforehand
The Model:Samples and the Transfer app handle stereo-to-mono conversion automatically — but the algorithm is basic, and on some Elektron devices it just takes the left channel and discards the right. If your stereo sample has hard-panned elements, those just disappear.
Converting to mono beforehand with It's mono, yo! gives you:
- Proper stereo summing: Both channels are combined into a single mono signal — no lost information.
- Half the file size on your Mac: Mono WAVs are exactly 50% smaller, making transfers faster.
- Preview-friendly library: Your sample library on Mac matches what you will hear on hardware.
- Predictable workflow: No surprises when a sample sounds different on the Model:Samples than in your DAW.
How to Batch Convert for Model:Samples
Batch convert your entire sample library in one go:
- Download It's mono, yo! from the Mac App Store
- Drag your stereo WAVs into the app (or a whole folder of them)
- Set Output Settings to WAV / 16-bit / 48 kHz for Model:Samples native format
- Choose an output folder (e.g. "Model Samples Ready")
- Hit Convert, then transfer to the Model:Samples via Elektron Transfer
Sample Prep Tips for Model:Samples
- Keep samples short — the Model:Samples has limited RAM per track. Trim silence aggressively.
- Bake in any stereo width effects (chorus, panning) to mono before conversion, so the result still sounds wide.
- 16-bit / 48 kHz is the sweet spot. Higher bit depths just take more storage without audible benefit on this device.
- If you have a stereo sample with important panned elements, mix down to mono carefully in your DAW first to preserve the balance.
